Cakes, one of the most popular desserts in the world, are also one of the oldest desserts in the world. The word ‘cake’ can be traced all the way back to the Old Norse word ‘kaka.’ It is been made by cultures throughout history, from the Greeks and the Romans, all the way until today. Cakes come in all kinds of shapes, sizes and flavors. Chocolate cake, red velvet cake, black forest cake, and cheesecake are currently some of the most popular varieties. Cake decoration is important aspect of cakes, and is even done competitively.
Learning about Pies
Pies differ from cakes quite a bit. Pies are made out of pastry dough and filling. Typically, a good pie should have a flavorful, flakey, butter crust, and a sweet, moist, delicious filling. Popular flavors of pie are apple, blueberry, pumpkin, and pecan, although the variety is nearly endless. Savory pies, such as chicken pot pies, or shepherd’s pie are available as an alternative to the dessert pie.

Last but not least on our tour of popular desserts. Cookies appear to have originated in in 7th century Persia. They were first brought over to America in the 1620s by Dutch shippers. Cookies are thinner, smaller, and generally contain much lesser water than cakes. The ingredients of a cookie are typically bound together by oil. The most iconic, and possible most delicious, cookie in America is the chocolate chip cookie.
